I need to add a system to comply with BMW CCA Club Racing requirements. I'm trying to narrow down the field of choices.

Halon or AFFF? I don't mind the expense of 1301. I don't think I'd use 1211 in the passenger compartment. And the Halon substitutes don't impress me. What happens if AFFF gets dumped on the engine?

Electric, push, or pull? I'd like to have the system actuators accessible from both windows and from the driver position.

How many nozzles? The fuel tank in my E36 is under where the back seat used to be. Is one nozzle near the driver enough, or should I put a second one in the back seat? With halon, I'd lean towards a 10 lb. system, with 1 nozzle in the engine compartment and 1 or 2 in the passenger compartment.

Check out the helmet rotation on the dummy during crash sled tests without a HANS device. Wow.

This should be required viewing by racers and track enthusiasts.

Hey Joe,

Here's a topic I'm sure you'd be interested in, seeing as you're a former Z3 owner I'm building up a Z3 race car and am looking to the best place to mount the anti-sub belts and the lap belt. The Seat is a Recaro Pole Position mounted on a square steel tube or should I weld plates to the floor sheet metal?

Second question, I'm putting a stock seat on the passenger side for driving instruction, what harness would you recommend for this? Thanks,

FYI, everyone.

May 10, 2006

MEMORANDUM
To: Our Valued Simpson Customers

Subject: Simpson Firesuits

In keeping with our policy to provide our valued partners with unmatched customer care, this letter is to inform you that we have written notice from Dupont as follows.

Dupont states "Effective immediately, DuPont Personal Protection will no longer offer Nomex Type N104 dyeable filament yarn. After more than two years of struggling to produce this product, we have made the decision that we have not been able to develop a commercially viable manufacturing process for Type N104".

To be specific, Nomex N104 refers to material used to manufacture Simpson Woven Filament and Knit Filament firesuits. Simpson products that are directly affected are listed below:

STD.F.19 Woven Filament
MTO.45 Filament Knit
MTO.25 Filament Knit
MTO.19 Woven Filament
MD-50F Filament Knit

We want to be clear that Simpson and all manufacturers of firesuits to the Motorsports Industry will be affected by DuPont's decision. Simpson has some reserve material which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Due to DuPont's decision and a strong product demand, we anticipate future increases in Nomex products.

If you currently use the above mentioned products, your Simpson representative will be contacting you to go over your needs and help you in making an informed and knowledgeable decision as we go forward. There are alternatives that will continue to meet your needs for a safe, comfortable and good looking suit.

We thank you for your patronage to the Simpson brand and look forward to many years of continued success. Please call 1-800-654-7223 or your Simpson representative if you have any questions or concerns regarding this announcement.

Sincerely,

A couple ideas:

Fundamentally change how you exit the car. You say your kicking left foot out first, which would mean your rotating your shoulders counter-clockwise leaning forward visor down toward the ground. Try removing the steering wheel, then scooting forward in the seat by pulling yourself forward using the upper cross bar, then twisting your back, right shoulder rotating clockwise and leaning out so that your visor is now toward the sky. If you now grab the door bar and pull up, you should be able to get your butt on the NASCAR bars and then step out. This way the back of the hans has no opportunity to snare the bar above the door.

The issue with the hans is that due to the tether length it can hang back off your neck and slightly down your back catching on the doorbar, so if your not going to change how you exit simply try pulling the yoke of the hans on either side down your chest so that the back of the hans is snug against the back of your helmet and isn't falling down your back creating an anchor against the door bar.

If your concerned with emergency exit, remove the vent window and its support. For some reason this wont be legal till 11/06 (issue with when submitted to crb) but if someone says anything it's a chicken shit protest. The vent can be moved to the passenger side (if you have one) by drilling out the rivets (CAREFULLY!!!!) and flipping it around. If you screw this up, you can rebuy a passenger vent window for around $65

Hope those ideas made sense, and one works.

AnotherDrew wrote:

Many who agree with said above also claim that X door bars are safer and stronger than a properly built Nascar style bars. Huh?? How's that? Door bars, especially in a side impact, are going to see more detrimental loads. Not only will it see loads in the plane of the X, but also loads perpendicular to the X (e.g. other car's bumper intruding into the door). An X rear brace will generally only see loads in the plane of the X.

The way I've heard this explained is that for a converted street car, X-bars give the stock door bars some room to absorb impact load before the cage comes into play.

I haven't seen any data on it, but I've heard it said.

I can't speak for the above picture above. There is alway's the "one-percent" incident where all the safety equipment in the world does not work! My post above addresses the issue to the best of my knowledge.

The feeling that even with a fixed seat back, you are probably still better off with the proper 4-point harness but you need to be sure that the harness is designed for anti-submarining protection. I would probably stick with stock seats and my Schroh QuickFit harnesses and save the race sheet for installation along with the rollbar - but that is just my preference.

I would not use a 5 or 6 point belt in a stock seat and I would only use a 4-point belt if it allowed for mounts to the factory points and preferrably used the factory pretensioner. The strength of the seat back is critical in a 4-point belt so look for an approved vehicle list from the harness manufacturer.

Hope this helps.
Not exactly. We have an LV15 (I think that is it) that is basically the same design but for the 3" webbing.
