why not use Kevlar or spectra, or some other material that would be both stronger and fire resistant for harness webbing.

would the elongation be too little for proper energy absorbtion?
wouldn't different weaves be able to address this?

Is it just because of the outdated(if ever warranted) 2 year throw away rules?

I guess if they made harnesses that lasted too long it would hurt their business plan?
the mounting of the shoulder straps can be somewhat lower than ideal as long as the angle is ok. ie: the farther back it is the lower it can be mouned without causing too much compression. this said, a harness bar or roll bar would provide much better restraint due to less webbing. the longer the webbing, the more stretch occurs in an impact. but with an airbag and no HANS device, more stretch is probably better. it may be safer to move forward more, absorbing more energy, or lessening the forces on your chest and shoulders. if it allows enough movement to reach the airbag, this should also absorb more of the forces. If very strong, tight restrains are worn and the helmeted head is not restrained by something(HANS or the airbag), serious neck injury could result in a frontal impact. It may even be safer just to use a cg lock to hold you in your seat better so as not to slide. this is especially true if a 4 point harness other than a schroth asm harness is used. I am sure you have already read schroth's info on this. if not please read it. I do not know of any other harnessess that are safe to use as a 4 point. the shoulder straps will pull up on the lap belt in a frontal crash, allowint your lower body to slide forward, as well as the lap belt crush your guts. in order to mount a 5 or 6 point harness, you would have to change the seats out, which would mean losing your side airbags.

in summary, your Audi is a well engineered highly safe automobile, and modifying it for safety reasons should nonly be done by someone who is very familiar with racing safety and AUDIs. I would recommend getting a CG lock, and maybe a torso strap to keep you from sliding.
I need to add a system to comply with BMW CCA Club Racing requirements. I'm trying to narrow down the field of choices.

Halon or AFFF? I don't mind the expense of 1301. I don't think I'd use 1211 in the passenger compartment. And the Halon substitutes don't impress me. What happens if AFFF gets dumped on the engine?

Electric, push, or pull? I'd like to have the system actuators accessible from both windows and from the driver position.

How many nozzles? The fuel tank in my E36 is under where the back seat used to be. Is one nozzle near the driver enough, or should I put a second one in the back seat? With halon, I'd lean towards a 10 lb. system, with 1 nozzle in the engine compartment and 1 or 2 in the passenger compartment.
Some incredible video here:

http://www.justracing.com/galleries/displayimage.php?album=20&pos=3

Check out the helmet rotation on the dummy during crash sled tests without a HANS device. Wow.

This should be required viewing by racers and track enthusiasts.

Hey Joe,

Here's a topic I'm sure you'd be interested in, seeing as you're a former Z3 owner I'm building up a Z3 race car and am looking to the best place to mount the anti-sub belts and the lap belt. The Seat is a Recaro Pole Position mounted on a square steel tube or should I weld plates to the floor sheet metal?

Second question, I'm putting a stock seat on the passenger side for driving instruction, what harness would you recommend for this? Thanks,

FYI, everyone.

May 10, 2006

MEMORANDUM
To: Our Valued Simpson Customers

Subject: Simpson Firesuits

In keeping with our policy to provide our valued partners with unmatched customer care, this letter is to inform you that we have written notice from Dupont as follows.

Dupont states "Effective immediately, DuPont Personal Protection will no longer offer Nomex Type N104 dyeable filament yarn. After more than two years of struggling to produce this product, we have made the decision that we have not been able to develop a commercially viable manufacturing process for Type N104".

To be specific, Nomex N104 refers to material used to manufacture Simpson Woven Filament and Knit Filament firesuits. Simpson products that are directly affected are listed below:

STD.F.19 Woven Filament
MTO.45 Filament Knit
MTO.25 Filament Knit
MTO.19 Woven Filament
MD-50F Filament Knit

We want to be clear that Simpson and all manufacturers of firesuits to the Motorsports Industry will be affected by DuPont's decision. Simpson has some reserve material which will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Due to DuPont's decision and a strong product demand, we anticipate future increases in Nomex products.

If you currently use the above mentioned products, your Simpson representative will be contacting you to go over your needs and help you in making an informed and knowledgeable decision as we go forward. There are alternatives that will continue to meet your needs for a safe, comfortable and good looking suit.

We thank you for your patronage to the Simpson brand and look forward to many years of continued success. Please call 1-800-654-7223 or your Simpson representative if you have any questions or concerns regarding this announcement.

Sincerely,

Chuck Davies
