LeMons: Court Summerfield Tragedy
By Jay Lamm, Founder

5/12/08 - A tragedy occurred at the 24 Hours of LeMons last Saturday at Altamont Motorsports Park. Court Summerfield, a driver, died.

A California Highway Patrol investigation was undertaken at the track. The CHP informed us that there was no mechanical failure or unsafe track conditions and that no other cars were involved. The CHP also informed us that, based on physical evidence and witness statements, it appears that the driver was not conscious prior to impact. We are awaiting the final reports.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Court's wife and family. We have established a memorial fund in his honor, with Court's wife receiving all proceeds. If you wish to contribute, please send your contact information and pledge amount to jlamm@driversdoor.com.

I'm deeply grateful for the outpouring of thoughts, wishes, and support shown to Court's family and teammates in the wake of this tragedy; thanks to all of you for being there when it's mattered the most.

This is always the worst kind of news we can find on racing sites. I am grateful it does not show up more often. Tragic to learn of a driver going down and yet not knowing why. Condolences to the family. Keep up the investigation to see what happened. Hang onto the good memories.
