SCCA Names Key Events, Adjusts Points Criteria for Super Sweep Award

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 17, 2009) – Sports Car Club of America has selected the nine National races that will serve as qualifiers for the 2010 SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep Award. Additionally, it has been revealed that, while it will continue to serve as a leg of the Super Sweep, the National Championship Runoffs will no longer be counted toward the nationwide point standings.
The SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep Award was created in 2009 and is the most difficult accomplishment a driver can achieve. To win the award, a driver must complete all four tasks in the same class, those tasks being: win one of nine key National races, win a divisional class championship, be named class champion in the nationwide points championship and win the SCCA National Championship Runoffs.
The nine key races for the 2010 race season are as follows:
Jan. 24 – Auto Club Speedway (SoPac)
March 6 – Texas World Speedway (Southwest)*
March 20 – Thunderhill (NorPac)*
March 21 – Road Atlanta (Southeast)
May 2 – Heartland Park Topeka (Midwest)
May 23 – Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Great Lakes)
June 27 – Road America June Sprints (Central)
July 3 – High Plains Raceway (Rocky Mountain)*
July 11 – Watkins Glen International (Northeast)
* - Double race weekend, must win first race
While five of the selected races remain the same as last year, several were moved to reflect events that attracted large car counts, and good competition, in 2009.
The nationwide point structure, which awarded base points per the GCR and a bonus point for each starting car a driver beat, previously included the National Championship Runoffs, which awarded double base points and put no cap on bonus points. To simplify the process, the Runoffs have been removed from the nationwide point standings, thereby ensuring that winning the race will be the sole factor in determining whether a driver has completed the Super Sweep.
“Winning the Super Sweep continues to be a very difficult achievement,” SCCA President and CEO Jeff Dahnert said. “The drivers who can run the table and complete all four requirements of the Super Sweep are truly exceptional.”
Seven drivers earned the SCCA Club Racing Super Sweep Award in its inaugural season: Garry Crook (DSR), Cliff Ebben (GT-1), Joel Lipperini (SSC), Juan Marchand (FM), Mark Mercer (S2000), Mirl Swan (FA) and Michael Varacins (FV).
