However, the latest rendition (C55) would be a force to be reckoned with. Anyone get behind the wheel of one of these?
Project "Diesotto" happens!

Diesel and petrol engines are growing closer...
The combustion process
Common-rail direct injection
Turbocharging
Mercedes-Benz is fast-tracking this process, to develop a hybrid which combines the best of petrol and diesel.
The "Diesotto" works without spark plugs, and runs on synthetic fuels. It has a compression ratio somewhere between petrol (10.0:1) and diesel ( 18.0:1).
The name "Diesotto" is also a Hybrid

It combines the names of Rudolph Diesel and Nikolaus Otto, the inventors of the diesel and four-stroke petrol engines.
Mercedes-Benz E 320 CDI models have continued to make headlines. Following their 30-day, non-stop trial on a five-mile oval circuit in Laredo, Texas, they achieved a new record during a fuel consumption test drive to Tallahassee, Florida, which was certificated by the USAC**. Without stopping to refuel each of the unmodified CDI models covered a distance of 1039 miles (1672 km), which corresponds to a fuel consumption of 4.75 litres per 100 kilometres. Some good E-class pictures are here

DaimlerChrysler is the world's first manufac-turer to develop hybrid technology that combines a powerful drivetrain with a highly efficient design concept, while at the same time meeting the highest demands in terms of driving dynamics and comfort.
The S-Class Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 7.6 seconds. The drivetrain in the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class "Hybrid" develops a maximum power of 241 kW/340 hp a new record for cars with hybrid drive systems. The V8 CDI diesel engine develops 191 kW/260 hp and 560 Nm of torque. The two electric motors, which have a combined output of 50 kW/70 hp, make for optimized ride comfort and acceleration. Thanks to the second electric motor, the diesel can be started at any time without transition, independently of driving mode.
