Getting rid of the top half of my STi wing

After a year of owning the STi I really like the car.

But one thing still was not working for me, looking in my rear view mirror and seeing that wing blocking my view.

At first I was going to try a few things with a wing/trunk I got. UPS did some cosmetic damage to the trunk (while they lost it and eventually found it) and by the time I was done arguing with them I had lost some momentum. I will start with the end results/comparison photos, details of the change below.

The rest is likely only interesting if you are considering doing this yourself. I had 2 criteria: I wanted the wing out of my rear view mirror and I wanted to be able to go back to stock. I decided to "cap" the base. Fortunately I have a friend with both tools and skills. We started with " plastic, cut to shape and rounded the edges, installed some threads to hold them in place.

Then did the sanding/primer/painting. I chose flat black so I a)wouldn't have to try to match the body paint and b) would match the small wing over the back window.

Next came installation. I removed the trunk (1 wire and 4 bolts) so I could work in the living room.

You need a deep socket to get the wing off.

Next comes the bolt that holds the wire that is taped down, the 2 screws and cover, and the 3 bolts under that.

Finally I bolted my parts down, put the base of the wing back on, and done!
